WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
Many factors contribute to mental health problems, including:
- Biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry
- Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse
- Family history of mental health problems
WHAT ARE THE EARLY WARNING SIGNS OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES
Not sure if you or someone you know is living with mental health problems? Experiencing one or more of the following feelings or behaviors can be an early warning sign of a problem:
- Eating or sleeping too much or too little
- Pulling away from people and usual activities
- Having low or no energy
- Feeling numb or like nothing matters
- Having unexplained aches and pains
- Feeling helpless or hopeless
- Smoking, drinking, or using drugs more than usual
- Feeling unusually confused, forgetful, on edge, angry, upset, worried, or scared
- Yelling or fighting with family and friends
- Experiencing severe mood swings that cause problems in relationships
- Having persistent thoughts and memories you can’t get out of your head
- Hearing voices or believing things that are not true
- Thinking of harming yourself or others
- Inability to perform daily tasks like taking care of your kids or getting to work or school
WHAT ARE CIHS OFFICE HOURS?
CIHS is opened 6 days a week; Mon- Fri (9am to 5 pm) and Sat (9am to 2 pm). CIHS over 24 hour on call crisis prevention services.

WHAT IS COI?
Community integration attempts to open the doors to help people figuratively develop a prescription for their lives. The program promotes recovery, full community integration, and improved quality of life for persons who have been diagnosed with any mental health condition that seriously impairs their ability to lead meaningful lives. Community Integration services are collaborative, person directed, and individualized. These services are an essential element of the health care and human services spectrum, and should be evidence-based. Community Integration Program focuses on helping individuals develop skills and access resources needed to increase their capacity to be successful and satisfied in the living, working, learning, and social environments of their choice.
WHAT IS THE COI PROCESS?
Step 1: Referral: CIHS receives clients on a rolling basis. Typically, clients are referred by, fiend, family, family member, school, hospital and community organizations. Clients can also refer themselves.
Step 2: Intake & Screening: Clients undergo screening to assess their needs and willingness to participate in CIHS’s COI program. Clients will an intake assessment and CIHS will recommend appropriate services.
Step 3: Therapist Collaboration: Upon the completion of the intake assessment; clients shall commit to bi-monthly visits with a CIHS recommended therapist at an Outpatient Mental Health Center.
Step 4: Initial Assessment: Clients will undergo an initial assessment to identify the individual’s strengths as well as the review of their physical and emotional health.
Step 5: Rehabilitation Plan: CIHS staff will perform a comprehensive assessment on each client and help them develop a rehabilitation plan. Each plan will be client center, reflect the client’s needs, personal goals and intervention strategies.
Step 6: Counselor Assignment: The fun begins when CIHS will assigns each client a counselor. The counselor will carry out the treatment plan reflected in the client’s rehabilitation plan by visiting with client at least 4x month (minor) or at least 6x month (adults). Visits are on-site (CIHS office) and off-site (home and community)
Step 7: Review: CIHS will review the client’s progress against their goal every 3 (minors) and 6 (adults) months. Likewise, CIHS will conduct in- person consultation with the client’s family and friends as necessary.

WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF OUR COI PROGRAM
- Each client will be assigned a counselor by CIHS
- Assign counselor will spend direct time with the youth in activities in the home and community that are designed to meet the goals in the treatment plan
- The mentor will coach, support and train the youth to be successful in navigating various social contexts, learning new skills and making functional progress
- The mentor will teach alternative strategies and provide anticipatory guidance to the youth
- The mentor will provide exposure to social situations in which age-appropriate skills can be practiced
- Role plays and behavioral rehearsal
- Skill acquisition and practice in the community
- Enhancement of conflict resolution skills
- Development of communication skills
WHAT DO I BRING TO THE INTAKE?
- Social security card, Identification Card and/or Birth Certificate
- Maryland Medicaid Card and any other insurance cards, including Medicare
- Name, Address and Phone Number of current or former Therapist, Psychiatrist and Medical Doctor
- Current medications
- Hospitalization records, medical records and any related records.
WHAT ARE THE COI QUALIFICATIONS?
Applicants must be diagnosed as having mental health disorders that is the cause of a significant psychological, vocational, educational, educational and or social impairment.
Applicant must have the cognitive ability to fully participate in the program.
Applicant must have active medical assistant or uninsured eligibility and be authorized for level of services by Value Option or CSA
Applicants with a mental health/Substance abuse must be a current participant or willing to enroll and participate in a drug treatment program.
HOW DO I PAY FOR COI SERIVCES?
CIHS is an approved Medicaid provider which means COI is a Medical Assistant billable service. This means COI is free with no out of pocket cost for services.
HOW DO I MAKE A REFERRAL TO CIHS
Referral can be made by anyone including the clients. Complete and submit a referral to CIHS by clicking HERE and completing the destination page.
